As in introduction to my newest section for this blog, I thought it was only appropriate to begin with a list of my personal pick of top 10 Disney Princesses. I also added a tagline to each princess which hopefully encapsulates what I find to be their message and why I placed them where I did. Please leave me your thoughts or personal picks!
Special thanks to The White’s List Blog for the idea!
10. Nala – “Be Strong”
One of the most overlooked princesses, Nala might not be human, but she still deserves her spot as a DP – or better yet, a Disney Queen. Nala is a survivor. She grew up under evil Scar’s rule and watched her beloved home waste away before her eyes. She has a clear distinction for what is right, and wasn’t afraid to put Simba in his place. Because of her tough love attitude, she helped in bringing Simba to his senses and had a hand in reinstating the rightful King of Pride Rock.
9. Rapunzel – “Live Your Life”
She has a dream! This girl is cunning and resourceful (hello, frying pan!). But more importantly, she’s determined. Rapunzel is a tad socially awkward, which is to be expected after spending your whole life in a tower. But that awkwardness was a refreshing change to the eloquent princesses that proceeded her. She’s down-to-earth and makes a more approachable princess, so you can bet that she will rule her kingdom fairly and gracefully. What more could one ask for?
8. Merida – “Stand Up For What You Believe In”
Probably the most fiery princess on this list, Merida is determined to keep control of her own destiny. She’s a headstrong tomboy who would rather run through the forest and shoot arrows than get dressed up and meet boys. I believe that Merida has redefined princesses for the younger generation. Her stubbornness is actually quiet a virtue because she doesn’t bend to what others expect her to be, and that’s a great message to deliver.
7. Ariel – “Follow Your Heart”
On the surface, she might appear to be a spoiled brat who makes stupid, rash decisions. But give the heartsick girl a break! She is following her heart and going against her family and society because she knows that she’s the only person responsible for her happiness. Ariel is a true rebel! She has an adventurous soul that cannot be stopped. She had to make a lot of tough choices and should be commended for her bravery. Way to go!
6. Jasmine – “Beauty Is Only Skin Deep”
She grew up in the lap of luxury, yet she never judged Aladdin for being a “street rat”. Jasmine wanted to be one of the people so badly that she ran away from everything she knew. I think that Jasmine is very humble and modest, but she doesn’t get the credit for being that way. She teaches such an important lesson, and that is to not judge a book by its cover.
5. Cinderella – “Kindness Is Always Rewarded”
She is the model of “Disney Princess”! Cinderella is beautiful and kind, but what I like most about her is her caring nature towards all the animals around her – including the mice. Her selflessness is admirable. While she’s always majestic, Cinderella does crack a joke every once in a while. Imagine a world where everyone treated each other with respect and were courteous. We could all learn a lot from her!
4. Elsa – “Don’t Hide Who You Are”
Another Queen, I know. Elsa is such an complex character that I related to in some aspect, albeit vague for sure! The eldest daughter does accrue certain pressures that are excused from the younger siblings, and her devotion to her family in trying to be the best that she can be for the sake of their reputation is a heavy burden to carry. When she finally breaks herself away from the figurative chains, I literally started to cry. But Elsa learned that she needed to open up and rely on the people who loved her. I think her character showed some of the most growth throughout the film, and it was empowering to get a peek at the Queen’s insecurities and then watch her overcome them.
3. Mulan – “Family is Number One”
Can you say badass? Mulan is hands down the toughest DP around. She shows the utmost nobility when she puts her life on the line just to save her father’s. Mulan doesn’t want anything for herself. She isn’t looking for a prince, or chasing a wispy dream. This girl is protecting her family, and going into battle knowing that she might not ever come home. She teaches us that we can do anything, we just have to try. I think she is an amazing role model. Mulan – you rock!
2. Tiana – “Hard Work Pays Off”
What can I say? My favorite DP quality is independence, and Tiana has that over any princess on any list. Tiana is not afraid to roll up her sleeves and get dirty. She never expects any hand outs, instead she just goes to work and keeps her eye on the prize. That endurance is so substantial, especially in today’s instant-gratification generation. She is smart, tough, and strong-willed. In my opinion, Tiana doesn’t get nearly enough recognition.
1. Belle – “Be Yourself”
She’s an outcast who fights against the mainstream. She walks down her own path, and isn’t bothered by the fact that she stands out. Belle cannot be sold on a safe, cozy journey. She wants to be out there, having an adventure! She is looking for more to her life, and inspires us all to not settle or conform. Her tagline is “Be Yourself”, and that’s the best advice anyone can give.
